The Africa Education Watch has admonished the Ghana Education Ministry to terminate the restored Teacher Trainnees Allowance of which according to them is needless and a waste of funds.

According to the Africa Education Watch, the Ministry of Education should as a matter of fact redivert funds used to pay trainee Teachers in the country to help recruit more Teachers into the Ministry to address the inadequacy and deficit of Teachers in the country notably in the remote areas.

Furthermore, Africa Education Watch, EDU WATCH through their statements for the new year emphatically explained that most of the remote and rural areas and districts in the country lack professionally trained Teachers and are in critical need of Teachers hence the Education Ministry should kindly abolish the Teacher Trainees Allowance and use it to recruit more teachers to curb the situation.

However, the statement indicated that ” For the avoidance of doubt, the amount earmark for the spending on the Teacher Trainees Allowance in 2022 can recruit more than 6,000 teachers that are urgently needed in rural schools. The Ghs242 million spent annually, on an over delayed Teacher Trainees Allowance which arrives at an immaterial time, continues to be a drain on the taxpayers. This look even compelling in 2022, as in 2021 government could not find the resources to replace even half of the 44,000 basic school teachers who allegedly left the classroom”.

Meanwhile, Kwasi Kwarteng speaking in an interview on Joy News on behalf of the ministry defended that, scrapping away of the Teacher Trainees Allowance will not permanently or automatically address challenges facing the colleges of education in the country.

On the other hand, Africa Education Watch, EDU WATCH in their assessment believes that the Teacher Trainees Allowance is contributing massively to the dwindling budgetary resources of the sector thereby proposing for abolishment.
