Ghana Police Service is mourning the late Inspector-General of Police, Charles Odartey Lamptey as he is laid to rest today, August 19, 2022.

In a tribute, the Service said Charles Odartey by all standards fully and sincerely paid his dues to the country.

In a biography, the Service said Odartey Lamptey, (Rtd) applied for an appointment in the Ghana Police Service on 9th July 1965 whilst working in the Ministry of Communication as a Senior Executive Officer.

His application was approved by the then President and he was subsequently transferred to the Police Service and appointed Deputy Superintendent of Police on 25th November 1965. Immediately after his appointment he joined the cadet course and was commissioned into the officer corps in January 1966.

In 1967, he earned Superintendent of Police; in 1970, he earned Chief Superintendent of Police; in 1974, he earned Assistant Commissioner of Police; and in 1977 he earned Deputy Commissioner.

Odartey Lamptey was appointed as the country’s eighth IGP in June 1979 and retired in November 1979.

The Service said, “though he had a rather short period in office as the Inspector-General of Police, there is no doubt that he really worked hard to uplift the image of the Service”.

He served in various positions including the Office of The President in Accra; the Regional CID in Accra; the Regional Courts in Accra; the Wa Division in the then Upper Region now the Upper West Region; the Regional Commander of the Northern Region; the CID Headquarters in Accra; and the National Police Headquarters.
