JUST IN:Teachers Union Issues Strong Statement To Akuffo Addo On This Issue -CHECK FULL STATEMENT.

The Pre- tertiary Teacher Unions in Ghana have released press statement calling on Mr. Anthony Boateng, the Deputy Director General of Education (GES) to proceed on retirement and decline the one year extension given to him by President Akufo-Addo. The above union have also called on Director General of the Ghana Education Service to direct all retired persons still in service to proceed on compulsory retirement.

A statement signed by Thomas T. Musah, General Secretary, GNAT, Angel Carbonu, President, NAGRAT, King Ali Awudu, President, CCT-GH and Mark Dankyira Korankye, General Secretary, TEWU on Monday, 22nd August 2022, reads as follows;

“The weekend has been inundated with concerns and agitations by the rank and file of education workers in Pre-Tertiary Education and other stakeholders on the issue of the post retirement contract extension granted to the Deputy Director General (MS) of Education and also the stay in office of other retired persons in education in the Ghana Education Service.

The Leadership of the Unions in Pre-Tertiary Education having assessed the situation and concerns, call on the former Deputy Director-General (MS) of Ghana Education Service, Mr. Anthony Boateng to respectfully decline the offer from the President and the Ministry of Education.”

The Pre-tertiary Teacher Union also called on the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service to direct all retired persons in the Ghana Education Service to hand over immediately to the next in line and proceed on their compulsory retirement.

“If by 30th September, 2022, such persons are still at post, we call on our members to disregard directives issued by these persons.” The release warned.

Background

Mr Anthony Boateng, the just retired Deputy Director General of Ghana Education Service recieved a year contract extension from the President of the republic of Ghana. According to the letter, he is to continue serving as Deputy Director General of GES.

Following that, many teachers have expressed concern. Some are of the view that, there are capable and qualified people to occupy that position and so he shouldn’t be given a contract extension.

A lot of revealations surfaced online that many Directors in GES whose retirements are due, are still occupying their post hence blocking newly promoted directors to occupy that post.
