Angry residents of Diabaakrom in the Dormaa West District of the Bono Region boldly stormed the District military base and burnt it into ashes. According to the Nkrankwanta Police, some soldiers were contracted by the Forestry commission to cut down all plantains belonging to some farmers in the Diabaa government Forest reserve.

Explanation for the destruction of the farms was based on the fact that, some of the farmers were cutting down some young trees in replacement with plantains.

After cutting down every plantain in the forest by the soldiers, the residents also stormed the base of the soldiers and burnt everything into ashes. From there, they headed to the Forestry commission’s revenue office in the town and burnt it. Some tyres were also set ablaze in the middle of the roads.

The counter action of the Diabaa residents gingered and angered the soldiers more. They entered the town in hundreds and started beating anybody at sight. Some of the residents had to run into the Bush.

The action of the Soldiers and the Diabaa residents brought the Bono Regional Minister Madam Justina Awo Banahene into the town. The District Chief Executive for Dormaa West Honorable Oppong Kwadwo Francis also came to the town . Together with the chiefs and people, they begged for calm. The action of both parties was totally condemned. Meanwhile, no arrest has been done.

This couldn’t solve matters until other prominent people reportedly added their voices for peace. As at filling this report, peace has been restored. However, the plantains cut down together with the burnt military base remains a loss.
