Minister of Education, Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum has stated categorically that there is no policy that seems to have suggests that parents should contribute monies to the schools to feed their wards.
Dr. Adutwum was however, quick to add that he had spoken to the headmistress of Wesley Girls and has told him there is no parent paying school fees or any levy but parents with compassionate hearts have been contributing to the school time to time and urge whoever is willing can also contribute to the schools but is not a must to any parent neither the students.
He made this disclosure on Adom FM’s dwaso nsem with Chief Jerry Forson C.J in a one-on-one interview on Wednesday morning.
When asked why the Education minister is not re-introducing P.T.A dues in order to lessen the burden in the schools with respect to the current feeding conditions, “P.T.A contributes very well to any school but we don’t accept that students should be levied with P.T.A such that if a parent does not pay, the ward should not come to school, that is the difference. No it doesn’t help, do not levy a student with an exorbitant fee and if you don’t pay P.T.A dues don’t come to school, that treatment that was meted out to the poor and the underprivileged over the years can not continue and is unacceptable”, he replied.
He noted, voluntary contribution is acceptable but you can not levy a student. Are students part of P.T.A ?.We levy parents that’s fine but you can’t levy a student.
All that we are saying is that levy can disadvantaged some people so no levies in Ghanaian schools but contribution is accepted, he cautioned.
No parent’s ward would be given a preferential treatment because his or her parent made a voluntary contribution to a Senior High School, he added.
