Good News For Ghanaians As MTN, AirtelTigo To Reduce Charges On momo Transfers By Up To 25%

AirtelTigo and MTN Telecommunication Company have concords to deduce the person to person transfer of Mobile charges on mobile money transfer by up 25 per cent in the country.

However, a statement emanating from the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunication, this new development is attributed to a series of engagements with various stakeholders and authorities in the matter.

“We have had extensive deliberation with the government on the need to lessen the impact on our consumers. We acknowledge the need to expand the tax base. However, to reduce the overall impact of the new levy on consumers, MTN and AirtelTigo have agreed to a downward revision of their P2P (person to person transfer) fees by up to 25% depending on the respective operator”, the statement indicated.

Furthermore, MTN Mobile Money Limited MTN MoMo, AirtelTigo Mobile Money Limited AirtelTigo MoMo and Vodaphone Ghana Financial Services Limited Vodaphone Cash are the operators in question.

On the other hand, Vodaphone Ghana Financial Services Limited have no charges on mobile money transfer in the country.

The government of Ghana through the Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori Atta propose a 1.75 per cent levy on all Mobile Money transfers, merchants transfers, Banks and inward remittances.

The Electronic Levy according to the Finance Minister applies to an electronic transfer of more than 100ghs or more but is therefore not applicable to a transaction less than 100ghs in the country.

However, according to the proposed budget, the levy is recommended to take effect on the 1st of January 2021.

According to the controversial infamous 2022 budget statement, about 16.7 per cent of the yield of the levy will be used by the government to champion the construction and rehabilitation of the roads and infrastructural development in the country.

Additionally, 1.67 per cent of the yield of the levy will be used to help to improve the transportation system in the country such as the purchase of new buses in the country.

The proposed levy by the Financial Team of the country has therefore been noted to have ignited a mixed reaction, commotion and agitation from the Ghanaian communities.
