John Mahama may soon be in trouble if the demands of a renowned Ghanaian Lawyer Maurice Ampaw is something to go by.
It will be recalled that on Sunday, the state held a 10th anniversary memorial service for the late President John Evans Atta Mills. The occasion was attended by President Akufo Addo, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Koku Anyidoho who is the founder and CEO of Atta Mills Institute as well as a host of others.
The President used the occasion to unveil a statue believed to be that of Atta Mills which was built by The Coastal Development Authority at the instruction of the President.
Shortly after that, Former President John Mahama lead a team of NDC faithfuls and the family of Atta Mills to celebrate the same occasion. The second celebration entered into 1:40pm, the exact time the late President is believed to had died.
A section of Ghanaians believe the second celebration lead by former president John Mahama was more colourful that the state sponsored one. It was the only occasion which was attended by the family members of the humble servant. On Facebook for instance, Mahama’s speech received over 1.5 million likes within an hour.
But the Kumasi based lawyer Maurice Ampaw believes what John Mahama and his colleagues did was unlawful and a sign of disrespect to the national celebration. Maurice Ampaw was speaking on a Kumasi based Wontumi Radio when he made these comments. He said anyone who disrespects the Coat of Arms, the National Anthem or the flag of Ghana commits an offence punishable by a jail term.
Maurice then called for the immediate arrest of John Mahama, Haruna Iddrisu, Dr. Cadman Mills and other organisers of the second session and put them before a court of competent jurisdiction. He said the law is no respecter of persons hence John Mahama cannot be beyond reproach. His prosecution will serve as deterrent to all Ghanaians who continually violate the national emblems with inpunity according to Maurice Ampaw.
