Pre-tertiary teachers in Ghana, on July 4, 2022 declared a nationwide strike.
The strike; according the teachers, was due to the government’s failure to pay their Cost of Living Allowance (COLA).
The latest information coming out from the teachers reveals that, another protest is likely to hit the country, if the authorities fails to heed to the latest request from teachers.
Mr. Angel Carbornu, the President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT); who revealed this, stated that, some teachers have threatened to picket at the Ghana Education Service one of these days, over the extension of contract of the Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Mr. Anthony Boateng.
According to Mr. Carbornu, the extension of contract of Mr. Boateng, has sparked discontent within the service, and that, the contract called into question the evaluation of personnel for internal promotions.
He added that, The decision for Anthony Boateng’s extension was made at the request of the Minister for Education, and that, “that is supposed to be the job of the Ghana Education Service Council, and not the Minister”.
He again warned that, “Article 199 of the Constitution says, a public officer shall; except as otherwise provided in this Constitution, retire from the public service upon attaining the age of 60 years,” and so the “Ghana Education service just needed to abide by Ghana’s retirement age laws”.
Speaking on Citi TV’s Breakfast Show, Mr. Carbornu said, “Why don’t we have a service, where when you attain the age of 60, you just pack your bag and baggage and go… it looks as if the service is not very exact on how we handle these matters, and it is causing a lot of agitation”.
The NAGRAT president again revealed that, “We are also already dealing with regional directors, and we wonder why the Ghana Education Service is not directing those regional directors, who have reached the retirement age, to hand over to the next in line”.
