The upcoming election 2024 has pushed former Electoral Commission boss Dr. Afari Gyan to send a very strong warning to the current Electoral Commission boss Madam Jean Mensa. This same warning was initially trumpeted by the opposition National Democratic Congress. However, the Electoral Commission of Ghana seems not to hear the caution.

According to Dr. Afari Gyan, any attempt by Madam Jean Mensa to use Ghana Card as the only basis to register fresh voters isn’t the best. Explaining further about his point through Daily Graphic reporters, Afari Gyan explained that if only Ghana Card is used, it will disenfranchise millions of Ghanaians. This is because there are majority of Ghanaians who don’t have the Ghana Card.

After Dr. Afari Gyan’s warning, some Ghanaians took to social media to express their views. While some people felt that Afari Gyan is having a point, there were those who felt that all that he is saying is off record.

According to one Gregory Ata Danso who is a media practitioner with Sunny FM, Afari Gyan has lost touch with the current computer and technological trends. He added that, the era where people have to queue and register their names in order to vote is gone for good.

” Per Afari Gyan’s warning, I’m very sure that he will dispute the great moment when Ghanaians are to vote online. The world is growing and Ghana must move along. We can’t keep doing things the old way” Gregory Ata Danso noted.

” This is a very good initiative from the Electoral Commission of Ghana led by Madam Jean Mensa. For now, it’s only Afari Gyan and the opposition National Democratic Congress that’s opposing this good initiative. Go to neighbouring Cote Divoire. They don’t queue to register for elections. They have their National Identification card. Once you are 18 years, you pick it up and go and vote. Afari Gyan must revise his warning” Dede Sefakor noted.

What’s your own view about this? Well, don’t forget that NDC General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketiah advised his party members to boycott the registration for Ghana card and they are crying now.
